Getting Google to work for you

Search Engine optimisation, or SEO, is the quest for the 'Holy Grail' of any website...
a top ten ranking in Search Engine searches, bringing in huge amounts of extra custom.

This is not easy to achieve in fields where there is a lot of competition for that spot but there are a few ways of increasing your ranking which need not cost the earth.

In fact, with a well-designed site, such as we provide, some of these things are already done. 

One of the first visitors to your site will be Googlebot or one of its equivalents from other search engines. This is a simple autonomous programme which 'crawls' the web, looking at sites and their content. The rules for how Google rankings are decided, based on what the bot finds, are quite secret and change fairly often but there are some things that we DO know...

As well as mindless, Googlebot is a soul-less creature - it is not interested in pictures or cool flash movies, it is only interested in words. If those words are links to other sites then it is even more interested. It will take careful note of any words or links it finds - particularly those it finds at the top of a web-page.

Not all words that googlebot can see are visible to you or I when we visit a site. For example, there are keywords near the top of each page and these are of great interest to a bot. Getting the keywords, and the order they appear on your site, right is a big part of SEO.

Having lots of links to your site from other, highly ranked, sites also helps... a lot. As does being listed in business directories - although you would do well to treat claims by some companies that they 'pay Google' to increase your site ranking with suspicion.

What we can do for you at tonygillham.com is, after a month or so, analyse your site's visitors, keywords used and overall ranking in order to develop a strategy suitable to your site which WILL improve your Google ranking for the main keywords used to find your site. If it doesn't do that, we don't charge you - as simple as that. 

We will also recommend other methods of boosting your ranking that we feel are appropriate for your site.

One thing we cannot promise is a top-ten ranking for all keywords related to your business and we would advise you to treat claims from people that you can buy this off them with suspicion. Google themselves sometimes receive emails from companies which claim they can improve their (i.e. Google's) google ranking to a top ten position.
