Translation by Ivan Shachov.  2nd Motorized Rifle Br – on the boundary at the crossing SW of Hill 145.1, intersection of railroad with earth embankment. 23rd Tank Corps during the day with forces of 399th Rifle division fought in intense combat with the advancing enemy. Division at 11.00 3.9 under the pressure of outnumbering enemy forces /296 Rifle division and 25-30 tanks/ began a withdrawal from its old boundary and by 15.00 division had reached the railroad line in field of operations /esp/ sovkhoz TRAKTORIZATSIYA B (?) / 3 km SW of GUMRAK/. 112th Rifle division – 524th Rifle regiment is defending the sector of gully DESYATAYA, Hill 155.1, /esp./ UVAROVKA; 385th Rifle regiment is defending the area of KUSTARNIK 1.5 km SW of Hill 144.7, /esp./ pr. (?) / 2 km to SW of KAMENNIY BUYERAK/. During the march at night on 1.9.42 enemy tanks cut off 413 men from the division’s units, their location is unknown. High Command took measures for location and withdrawal of people to the regiment’s area. The 98th Rifle division concentrates in the area of Hill 128.0, /esp./ Hill 136.5, N suburbs of GORODISCHE. At 13.00 3.9.42 the 87th Rifle Division, together with the Military-Political School of STALINGRAD, counter-attacked the enemy from Hill 135.1 in the direction of OPYTNAYA STANTSIYAA. At 14.00, under heavy mortar and small arms fire, the division was stopped 500 m N of OPYTNAYA STANTSIYA. The 196th Rifle division completes concentration in the area of TALOVOY, YEZHOVKA, BABAYEVO, OPYTNAYA STANTSIYA.
throughout the day od 2.9.42 the 131st Rifle division was fighting holding actions and from 13.00 with special units (?) and separate elements began concentration in the area of VERKH. YEL'SHANKA, Hill 144.9. Throughout 3.9 it was fighting against enemy tanks advancing from the South, and by the end of the day was defending this boundary: the 486th Rifle regiment – on a boundary 1.5km W of PESCHANKA; 743rd Rifle regiment defending STARODUSOVKA; 593rd Rifle regiment – at Hill 143.5 and a nameless marked Hill to the South.  GOROKHOV’s operational group – 124th, 149th Rifle Br and 282 NKVD Rifle regiment, detachment of marines, 227th Seperate AT Battalion – to strongly defend the zone at RYNOK, Hill 185.4, with the following task: relying on the anti-tank areas of SPARTAKOVKA, settlement STALINGRAD TRACTOR FACTORY, prevent the enemy from entering STALINGRAD from the North. Prepare counter-attacks with forces of not less than one Rifle Br, and tanks, in the direction of ORLOVKA. Available tanks must be dug into the ground, providing all-round fire. Discretionary line on the left – settlement of STALINGRAD TRACTOR FACTORY, Hill 85.1, Hill 144.2, Hill 129.6. 2nd Tank Corps – 26th, 99th, 27th Tank Br, 2nd Motorized Rifle Br, 98th Rifle division, 115th Rifle Br, relying on prepared positions, concentrating large groups on the flanks – continue to hold the boundary at Hill 135.4, Hill 144.2, Hill 147.6, Hill 143.6, not letting the enemy breakthrough in the S and SE directions. 26th Tank Br is executing a combat mission as ordered by the front in the area of settlement PESCHANKA. 99th Tank Br – in GOROKHOV’s operational group – prepare counter-attacks in the direction of RYNOK, GORODISCHE. Dig in available tanks, echeloning them in depth, taking into account all-round fire. 23rd Tank Corps / 189th, 160th, 39th Tank Br, 20th Motorized Rifle Br, 399th Rifle division/, having main force on left flank, - strongly defend held boundary, having task of preventing the enemy moving in the direction of STALINGRAD. Prepare counter-attacks in directions: KUZMICHI, BOLSHAYA ROSSOSHKA. Special attention must be paid to the preparation of a counter-attack in the direction of PITOMNIK. Dig in available tanks, echeloning them in depth.  42nd Rifle Br is on the march within the city limits. By 8.00 3.9 the crossing of its units was over, with the exception of combat transport, and during the night to 4.9 concentrated in area of Zone No 5 and No 6. Position of other units – no changes. ENEMY LOSSES: During 3.9 30 tanks were destroyed Our losses – 15 tanks. Estimated losses in manpower are not available. *

35th Guards Rifle division – concentrate in battery areas No 88 and 90 in areas /esp./ YEZHOVKA, KRUTENKIY, VOROPONOVO, PESHANKA, STARODUBOVKA, with the additional task of dislodging the enemy submachine gunners from battery area No 89 and strongly holding it in defence.  196th Rifle division – with 50th Separate Artillery Battalion, 398th Anti-tank regiment) /4 guns/, 236th Rifle regiment – is defending the existing boundary at TALOVOY, YEZHOVKA, BABAEVO, OPYTNAYA STANTSIYA, preventing enemy advance in the SE direction. Prepare counter-attacks – OPYTNAYA STANTSIYA, GUMRAK, YEZHOVKA, VOROPONOVO. 33rd Guards Rifle division with 52nd Separate Artillery battalion and three batteries of 651st AT regiment – strongly defend /esp./ EZHOVKA, pr. KRUTENKIY, Hill 153.2 with the following task: eliminate the enemy in front of the frontline and do not to let him into the outskirts of MININO, prepare a counter-attack in the direction of PESHANKA. 20th Motorized Rifle Br with 160th, 174th and 175th Separate Artillery battalions – strongly defend the road junction in the area of Hill 151.7, Hill 135.1, ALEKSEEVKA, do not let tanks breakthrough in the direction of KUPOROSNOE, organise a strong flanking fire system in the direction of TALOVOY and Hill 103.3, machine-tractor factory, prepare a counter-attack in the direction of TALOVOY. Be ready to counter-attack in the directions of: ALEKSANDROVKA, GORODISCHE, ORLOVKA, ALEKSANDROVKA, Hill 105.2, STALINGRADSKIJ, TALOVOY.
