Page 1 Sept 19 62A Diary

2. 137th Tank Br. - advance from the southwestern outskirts of KRASNIY OKTYABR' towards the shed, with the task of eliminating the enemy on the western slopes of hill 102.0 and, by the end of the day, seizing Saray and hill 112.5.
 Boundary to the left /esp/ hill 102.0 /esp/ dairy farm.


 3. 95th Rifle Div. - advance from hill 102.0 to the dairy farm with the goal of eliminating the enemy in the area of attack and, by the end of the day, seizing the North-Western part of the city of STALINGRAD.
 Boundary to the left: /esp/ the pier KRASNIY OKTYABR', /esp/ junct./3km West of VDKCh (watertower?) on the VOLGA/


 4. 39th Gd. Rifle Reg. /13th Gd. Rifle Div./ - advance from the region of the SE slopes of Hill 102.0 along the railway line to the station STALINGRAD-I with the task: destroy the enemy, unite with parts of the 13th Gd. Rifle Div, cut off enemy routes of retreat to the west.


 5. 13th Gds. Rifle Div. /without 39th Gd. Rifle Reg./ continue the fulfillment of previous orders and clean out the centre of the city of enemy forces.
 Boundary to the left: r.TSARITSA.


 6. 112th Rifle Div. at 11.00 19.9 move along the railway line to the area of the bridges over the ravines DOLGIY and KRUTOY. After the advance of 39th Gds Rifle Reg on the line of the ravines/ South of Hill 102.0/ take and hold the W and S slopes of Hill 102.0.


 7. Comrade Gorokhov's Group - /124th, 149th Rifle Br & 282nd Rifle Reg./ - continue the attack, contributing to the left wing of the Stalingrad front's destruction of the enemy in the region NW of RYNOK.


 8. 42nd Rifle Br. with the attached remnants of the 244th Rifle Div. - attack from the South along the railway towards the station, in close co-operation with the leftflank units of the 13th Guards Rifle Div.
 Boundary to the left: as before.


9. Rifle Br. - continue fulfilment of previously set task.

10. To all commanders of the remaining formations of the army - hold your positions and do not allow the

enemy penetration in the city of STALINGRAD.


 11. Head of Army Artillery - Create a group Rifle regiment of 137th Tank Br and 95th Rifle Div. The regiment group rockets - by night and day, organise the planned destruction of the enemy in the following regions: the North - the ravine south of 102.0, the East - the railway line, the South - r.TSARITSA. Special attention to the region of Saray.


 12. The infantry attack begins at 12.00 19.9.42.


 13. Army HQ CP at the ravine 1km north of the pier at KRASNIY OKTYABR'.

 The army continued its defence of the previous frontline, parts of its forces advancing with the task of destroying the breakthrough into the city of STALINGRAD of the enemy.


 The enemy showed stubborn resistance to our attacking forces. In the Northern areas our units conducted intense combat, knocking out enemy pillboxes. 

 In the centre of the city there was bitter street fighting.

  Parts of the Northern group  - 124th, 149th Rifle Br & 282nd Rifle Reg. - meeting machine gun and artillery fire from Pillboxes, continued slowly in its advance.
  Their losses for 19.9: 26 killed, 93 wounded.

 115th Rifle Br. with a composite regiment of 196th Rifle Div., 724th Rifle Reg. held firm their previous positions.


 23rd Tank Corps continued the defence of their previous positions and forces of the 9th Mot. Rifle Br. conducted an offensive in the direction of Hill 126.3 and, upon taking hill 126.3, continued to advance slowly.


 137th Tank Br. from the region of the NW slopes of hill 102.0 advanced in the direction of Saray. Their task: destroying the enemy on the W slopes of hill 102.0. Went to the boundary 1 km east of Saray.


 95th Rifle Div. in composition 90th and 161st Rifle reg. at 12.00 went to the offensive. after taking the crest of hill 102.0 units of the division fell under intense enemy artillery/mortar fire.

 112th Rifle Div. 199th forces of the 385th and 524th Rifle reg went over to the offensive and met ???? enemy resistance which at 14.00 they overcame.


 385th Rifle Reg. East. Outskirts of the Linen factory (?) the regiment repulsed 3 enemy counterattacks with forces of company strength and tanks. 

 416th Rifle Reg. continued the defence of its previous positions, contributing fire to the attacking units on the W slope of hill 102.0


 39th Gd. Rifle Reg. Due to the delay in the advance of the 95th Rifle Div. it remained in its previous position.


 13th Gd. Rifle Reg. conducted heavy street fighting in the centre of the city, having been given the task of clearing that area of the enemy. In the course of the combat the division suffered heavy losses.


 42nd Rifle Br, 244th Rifle Div., 35th Gd. Rifle Div. with 1?? Tank Br., remnants of the 131st Rifle ??, 10th Rifle Brigade during the day conducted street fighting. tyhe position of these units at the end of the day is unclear.


 92nd Rifle Br. defended its line within the city on the line ELEVATOR, along ??????? St, then SE to an un-named (?) ravine and further to the right bank of the r. VOLGA.


 87th Rifle Div. & 313rd Rifle Div. Divisional HQ's went to the left bank of the r. VOLGA for re-quipment

 CP - ravine 1.5 km N of the pier KRASNIY OKTYABR', secondary CP - in the region of the central pier of STALINGRAD.


 Army command has decreed: During the night to reconnoitre the enemy, to reinforce achieved boundaries and, from dawn 20.9, to continue the fulfillment of set tasks.


 ENEMY LOSSES: 38(?) Mot. Rifle Br. from 6.9 to 19.9 destroyed up to 1600 troops and officers, eliminated 1 aeroplane, 32 machine-guns, 5 guns, 12 tanks, 35 vehicles, 6 pillboxes and 12 motorcycles.
